Could This Be Education?

Could This Be Education?

I’ve been thinking more and more about the legitimacy and sense of unschooling.  I don’t know that I will ever fully quiet my fears of all the “what ifs” and “but, if I don’t do a, b and c…” types of thing that run through my head, but I am ultimately convinced that unschoolers have it right, at least where my family is concerned.  It is a difficult transition for me in some respects, because I enjoy planning unit studies…

Am I An Unschooler?

Am I An Unschooler?

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.   It has taken me a while to truly define what it is we do around here.  Part of my hesitation has come from the fact that we are relatively new to the life of homeschooling and I was waiting it out to see what method(s) seemed to work best for my family.  Part of my…

Playroom Makeover

Playroom Makeover

We have done a few makeovers of our house, probably in a manic wave of pre-schoolyear-preparation hysteria.  Whatever the cause, the result has been something I am proud of and the girls are excited about.  One morning, their surprise was a new take on their play room.  Previously, the playroom consisted of all things essentially shoved around the perimeter of the room.  Functional, but not necessarily very imaginative, or even the best use of space, for that matter.  So, I…

Homeschool Room 2013-2014

Homeschool Room 2013-2014

In preparation for our new school year, we have completely revamped some of our rooms, to include the play room and our main homeschooling area.  As you may have seen on this post, we recently created a reading nook.  Well, that lasted about a week before I decided to overhaul the entire room, nook included.  We now have a new and improved reading nook, along with a whole new homeschool setup.  So, without further adieu, here is our homeschool room…

Quiet Time

Quiet Time

So, I tend to get bored with certain areas of my home and, consequently, find myself rearranging a room or repurposing some random piece of furniture at times.  Utilizing space in different ways can be a fun and therapeutic way to make old new again.  So, in preparation for the upcoming school year and the hope that Tater Tot will become a more avid reader over the course of said year, I defined a space in our homeschool area just…

Busy Box? Yes, please.

Busy Box? Yes, please.

Well, I have jumped on the busy box bandwagon! For those that may not be aware of the wonderful world of busy boxes, they are simply genius little activities that kids can do without the need of guidance or direction.  These are particularly helpful for times when Mom needs a moment of peace, such as to cook, or research…or pee.  (They always find me.)  I believe the ideal busy bag is one in which the kids are actively thinking and…

Boo Bear’s First Gymnastics Class

Boo Bear’s First Gymnastics Class

Boo Bear has been watching big sis do gymnastics for quite some time and finally reached an age where it seemed she might focus enough to try it out for herself.  So, in Spring 2013, we set her up with a local class lasting a couple of months.  She really enjoyed what she referred to as “my own gymnastics show”.  However, she is still my flighty little one, often running off to do her own thing rather than stay focused…

High School Homeschool?

High School Homeschool?

So, I came across an article recently from a woman who was pointing out why she could “never” homeschool her child…her teen, specifically.  You can see the full article here:  7 Reasons I’d Never Homeschool My Teen. I would first like to point out that the author is not putting down homeschoolers, only pointing out why she, herself, could not do it.  Also, I recognize that a child that has been in compulsory school his entire life, as hers may…

Flying

Flying

We are lucky to be part of a wonderful homeschool coop here, which has afforded us many interesting experiences.  One of these was a chance for all the girls to go to the local airport for an airplane ride with Gordy.  Though Tater Tot has been up before with Bubby, it was an opportunity for all the girls to experience the skies.  There were mixed feelings at varying points of the flight and I think Sweet Pea wasn’t really sure…
